Low Key Lighting

Low-key lighting is where the majority of the scene is made up of dark areas, due to low or now light and or dark subjects. Good for night scenes and whole genres of films such as horror, thrillers and dramas.

As we have said before this nothing to do with exposure but is just the relationship of areas of dark areas to high light areas.

In this example we start off by picking out objects or areas to be lit, this is determined by what may be important in the script or what the DOP thinks looks best or practical reasons like where lamps can be hidden or placed.

Then a fill light is added, with this type of scene a high lighting contrast is normal. So the light level of the fill is low, Remember that the lighting contrast the relationship of the key plus the fill to the fill alone.

The key light on the Actor is from below as lighting from below is disturbing it is commonly used in horror films.
